Boxing and UFC Go Head to Head Again

It was on September 19, 2009 when Boxing and UFC went head to head last and the first time around Boxing won that match-up in a lot of peoples eyes. Boxing had Juan Manuel Marquez taking on Floyd Mayweather Jr. The UFC had Rich Franklin taking on Vitor Belfort at UFC 103. They were both on PPV and boxing ended up doing better numbers because the UFC Main Event was not good. Last night was a different story. Boxing had Manny Pacquiao taking Miguel Cotto and the UFC had the legend Randy Couture taking on Brandon Vera.

The problem for boxing last night is it only had one great fight whereas the UFC had three great fights. Michael Bisping defeated Denis Kang in the 2nd round. Then you had Dan Hardy winning by unanimous decision against Mike Swick. Then you had Capt. America, the living legend, The Natural Randy Couture defeated Brandon Vera by unanimous decision. Pacquiao and Cotto went into the 12th round before Manny beat him. It was a history making night for Pacquiao who won his 7th title in his 7th weight class. That’s just really crazy because there are too many weight classes to begin with. Even though he made history, the spotlight was probably stolen away from him because UFC 105 was free and on Spike TV. It was also in England and most people probably didn’t know it was on a tape delay so they tuned in to watch.

If I didn’t know any better I would think Dana White is trying to kill boxing all together. Why else would you put a pay-per-view on free TV the night of a major boxing fight. It’s simple business. The UFC is trying to prove that they are the dominant sport. I am not taking anything away from the Pacquiao and Cotto fight because it was a really great fight to watch but it’s simple common sense. Would you pay 50 dollars to watch one good fight or pay nothing to watch 5 good fights on Cable Television? It’s not rocket science and not hard to figure out. It was a great night if you’re a fan of any type of professional fighting. Boxing won on September 19th but the UFC won last night. If they meet head to head again, who will win the rubber match? Who will be fighting on that night? And which sport will gain momentum? All these questions and more.

  1. You, dear sir, are a DUMBASS! Did UFC really win in November? I mean, sure they had "five great fights" but that one fight with Manny and Cotto outweighed all them combined. They came out slugging and weren't little girls holding back. Manny went into attack mode to show he was the best fighter. And do we know the buyrates for the PPV? We do not. I don't even know the tv ratings for UFC. And I DARE UFC to be dumb enough for a free card when the biggest PPV ever hits, Manny vs Floyd.

  2. First off, why don't you clean up your language and two thank you for falling right into my trap of what I want. I say things to make people made and make them think. So thank you I appreciate it.

Secondly, I think having a free UFC PPV did hurt Manny and Cotto because no one wanted to see that. People want to see Manny and Floyd. Plus most sports bars don't even show boxing anymore because their PPV prices are show high. When Manny and Floyd finally fight UFC, WWE or TNA won't even be able touch it and that I will agree with you on.
