Fantasy Booking: The Much Needed AEW Trio’s Championship

In 2021, we saw the AEW roster grow exponentially and has more depth than any company could ever ask for, but with the amount of talent they have, only a few of them have a solid purpose. Currently, there is the AEW World Championship, TNT Championship and Tag Team Championship for the male competitors. The current AEW website shows that there are close to 100 male talents in AEW and with only three championships there is not a lot for people to fight for. There is enough talent in AEW and their open-door policy to have a sixteen trios’ tournament for the AEW Championships. These would be the sixteen trios in the tournament with one trio coming from Impact Wrestling and the other coming from New Japan Pro Wrestling:

Adam Cole & reDragon,
Daniel Garcia & 2.0,
Jurassic Express and Christian Cage
Dark Order
Best Friends and Orange Cassidy
The Inner Circle (Santana, Ortiz, Guevara)
The Pinnacle (FTR and Shawn Spears)
Team Taz
The Nightmare Family
Hardy Family Office
Sting, Darby Allin, & CM Punk
The Factory
The Gunn Club
Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks
Violent by Design
Suzuki-Gun

If I am booking this tournament Adam Cole and reDragon are on opposite ends of the bracket as Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. You don’t want these two teams to face other at all and it will make fans think they are going to face each other in the finals, but it doesn’t happen that way. The dream team of Sting, Darby Allin and CM Punk ride a wave of momentum and face Kenny Omega and Young Bucks in the Semifinals. Cole and reDragon being in antagonists end up costing the Omega and the Bucks their chance in the finals. Furious by losing, Omega and the Bucks cost Cole and company their chance at the finals setting up a fan favorite final with Jurassic Express and Christian Cage.

The finals would take place on a special show dedicated to Trios, so that wouldn’t the only Trios match. The number one contender would be decided in a Street Fight between Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks taking on Adam Cole and reDragon. As for the rest of the trios, they would all be thrown into a Battle Royal. If one member of the team gets thrown over the top rope, then the team is eliminated. The last team remaining would be the number two team behind the winner of the street fight. The loser of the street fight would be ranked number three. The order of elimination in the Battle Royal would determine the rest of the rankings.

I believe Trios Championships are a must for AEW right now with the amount of talent that they have. One of the biggest complaints is that AEW has too many factions and those complaints are very valid. If there were Trios Championships, it would create new rivalries, give teams a direction and allow the true singles competitors to go after the singles championships. It would also the tag teams who are lost in the shuffle to pair up with someone and focus on another goal. The tag team division in AEW is very crowded, which is another reason why the Trios Championships are a must. Whether or not, AEW decides to go this direction remains to be seen. If they don’t go this direction, I feel they are going to have a lot of teams unhappy that they have no direction and purpose.
